Adrian Sabom grew up surrounded by the wide-open spaces of her family’s South Texas ranch. As a child, she spent every weekend during quail season with her family, and now she does the same with her husband and children. It is time spent in the field where Sabom finds herself and her family truly connecting.
“Seeking food for the table and food for our souls, we head out into the rangelands and pastures, seeking to harvest something that cannot be bought,” she says.
Sabom’s passion for the outdoors, and especially for sharing it with her children, is one of the reasons she was tapped as an ambassador for Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation’s (TPWF) We Will Not Be Tamed campaign. The campaign calls us to appreciate the wildness of Texas, the vastness of our Texas spirit and why we should be inspired to conserve it.

In partnership with Texas Monthly, TPWF has just published a new booklet that features all of the We Will Not Be Tamed ambassadors. The ambassadors’ personal stories are integrated throughout this book through the lens of their favorite outdoor activity and place. It’s a wild journey across Texas with some remarkable outdoorsmen and women!
There is a limited supply of these booklets, and TPWF plans on providing one to every person who joins as a member this month!

TPWF is working to secure donations to match a $1 million challenge grant offered by Apache Corporation to repair Balmorhea’s beloved spring-fed swimming pool. The West Texas treasure has been closed since early May after part of the structure collapsed during the pool’s annual cleaning, which is attributed to decades of erosion from spring flow.
More than $200,000 toward the match has been raised or pledged so far. You can help reopen the pool and double the impact of your gift with this challenge grant.

We're proud of our fearless leader, Anne Brown, for being awarded the “Quail Patriot of Texas Award” from the Quail-Tech Alliance at Texas Tech University. She was recognized at the Cross Timbers Quail Coalition’s annual banquet in Fort Worth last month, pictured above with Dr. Dale Rollins, who heads the Rolling Plains Quail Research Foundation. Anne was honored for her many career accomplishments, including raising more than $100 million for the wild things and wild places of Texas since she joined TPWF in 2012. Congratulations, Anne!

Adrian Sabom and Xochitl Rodriguez did not know each other before both becoming ambassadors for TPWF’s We Will Not Be Tamed campaign. They connected immediately over shared interests, though their outdoor experiences are vastly different, reflecting their respective family’s culture and the strikingly different landscapes they call home.
“Xochitl had never shot a gun and she couldn’t fathom that. I had been hiking, but nothing like the hiking Xochitl does, and I had certainly never hiked in the Franklin Mountains,” said Adrian. “So, it evolved into maybe we should each do each other’s thing."
A Texas Parks and Wildlife TV Series video crew chronicled their adventures in a segment that will air on PBS stations next week. Watch a sneak preview!
