Wild Times March 2024

Rick Wittenbraker lives the outdoor life and pursues his passion whether he is in the field, on the water, or at his desk. As chief marketing officer for Howler Brothers, an outdoor apparel brand based in Austin, Rick’s love for the outdoors manifests itself every day.

“It’s something I’ve grown up with my entire life, and I relish every opportunity I get to spend outdoors,” he says. “It doesn’t matter if you catch fish, or whatever the mission of the day is. It’s way more about the day or the experience and everything you learn along the way.

Wittenbraker is an ambassador for Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation’s (TPWF) We Will Not Be Tamed campaign. The campaign calls us to appreciate the wildness of Texas, the vastness of our Texas spirit and why we should be inspired to conserve it.

Story #2: San Antonio Man Wins Grand Prize Toyota Tundra

A big part of the 2018 We Will Not Be Tamed campaign was a one-of-a-kind sweepstakes featuring all the gear needed to Live the Wild Life. Tens of thousands of outdoor-loving Texans signed up, and dozens of prizes were awarded, including the grand prize Toyota Tundra.

San Antonio area resident Juan Martinez was the grand prize winner.

“I was in absolute shock. l didn’t believe it at first,” said Martinez about getting the call that he won. “The only thing I’ve ever won before is a fishing rod. And that was a fishing rod. This is a truck!”

Martinez, an avid angler, is a juvenile probation officer for Bexar County. Before he picked up the keys to the Tundra, he drove a 2009 vehicle and had been thinking about a new truck for a while. He says he can’t wait to hook up his fishing boat to his new Toyota Tundra.

“I really appreciate Toyota, not only for this new truck, but everything they do for conservation in Texas,” he said. “They do a great job of supporting Texas Parks and Wildlife.”

The We Will Not Be Tamed campaign will continue in 2019 with a new roster of ambassadors to help spread the word.

Story #4: TPWF Reaches Challenge Grant for Balmorhea Pool

Thanks to hundreds of Balmorhea State Park lovers, including recent generous gifts from Texas Pacific Land Trust and Garrison Brothers Distillery, TPWF has met the $1 million challenge grant offered by Apache Corporation to repair Balmorhea’s beloved spring-fed swimming pool. The West Texas treasure has been closed since early May after part of the structure collapsed during the pool’s annual cleaning, which was attributed to decades of erosion from spring flow. The cost of the repair is $2 million, and Apache Corporation generously offered to match donations dollar-for-dollar up to $1 million.

In the last couple of months, TPWF has received more than 500 gifts from all over the state, and it’s interesting to note that 60 percent of the donations are less than $100. Every dollar counts and we couldn't have done it without the support from friends like you! Thank you!

Story #5: Wild Texas Film Tour Coming to 14 Texas Cities
