Wild Times November 2024

If you think protecting Texas’ wild things and wild places as a Texas Game Warden is a wild job, just imagine the internships! Thanks to Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation’s (TPWF) partnership with the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA), six new summer interns recently took a walk on the wild side of wildlife law enforcement through TPWD’s Internship Program. This is CCA’s seventh year funding these invaluable internships in partnership with TPWF.

This summer’s interns were assigned to the coastal areas of Aransas, Nueces, Cameron, Galveston, Harris and Fort Bend counties, and they each logged 200 hours helping our Texas Game Wardens patrol our coastal communities. For all, the unscripted days and unmatched experiences on the job solidified their interest in a conservation career. Just ask intern Brent Applebaum, whose first task on the job was capturing and relocating an alligator from a busy roadway to its natural habitat. “This internship significantly increased my respect for Texas' valuable natural resources and my interest in a career as a conservation officer."

Lt. Rachel Kellner, who leads recruiting efforts for TPWD’s Law Enforcement Division, couldn’t be more pleased with the popularity and success of the program. “The summer internship program is our single best recruitment tool in the Law Enforcement Division. Being a former intern myself, I have seen firsthand the effect the investment has on a potential cadet. We could not fund these positions without generous partners like CCA, and I personally want to thank everyone who has a part in supporting our internship program."

Story #3: WWNBT: Meet Clay Spencer

Clay Spencer grew up in Fort Worth and has been visiting his family’s ranch near Lampasas his entire life.

"It is such a special place. I grew up exploring the land and making memories that I still treasure.”

His passion for fly fishing and love of wild places led him to Alaska to work as a guide right after college. He was ridiculously happy but eventually left the Alaskan wilderness for a job in the business world.

Dissatisfied with the fishing shirts available on the market, Clay decided to create his own. Armed with real-life business experience and an MBA, he founded Poncho Outdoors, known for sustainably made shirts for the outdoors.

Now living in Austin, Clay is using his work to ignite a passion for protecting wildlife and wild places all over the world.

"It’s our water, all of our water. All of the rivers, all of the oceans, all of the beaches--it’s all ours, and it’s all interconnected."

A shared passion is why Clay is proud to join the ranks of We Will Not Be Tamed ambassadors for Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation. We Will Not Be Tamed calls us to appreciate the wildness of Texas, the vastness of our Texas spirit, and why we should be inspired to conserve it.

"It aligns perfectly with Poncho’s mission and my mission to save the wild places and wild things that we all love. Supporting that mission is near and dear to my heart."
